Are you barraging your site visitors (prospects) with tons of sexy product features? Are you unabashedly spewing all your superlatives at their feet? That's what I call a feature dump!
It's like listening to a car salesman blathering on about chrome wheels, fine Corinthian leather, and tortoise shell steering wheels to a busy soccer mom looking for a way to cart her 5 kids around to practices and games, in between her umpteen trips to and from her floral delivery business.
(A simple "how can I help you?" would have spelled that out, big guy!)
And what about your services? Are you merely listing every service you offer like a virtual smorgasbord, or are you painting a picture of HOW each service can benefit them? If this sounds like you, it's time to clean things up!
START WITH THE END GOAL IN MIND!
Make sure you're connecting and engaging with your potential clients and customers. Offer a streamlined path to lead them down by:
- Knowing WHAT they want
- Knowing WHY they want what they want
- Offering what they want (the solution) on a silver platter
The upside for you? They'll think you're a genius! Okay, maybe just an expert…but it will build trust and increase the likelihood that they'll return for more, and a happy satisfied customer spreads word of their good fortune. This creates a buzz and more traffic to your blog, more people seeing your message, and…well...
Are you starting to see how this message thing is so important?
People want you to help them solve problems…not listen to you prattle on about something that has no meaning or significance for their current needs. Help them get to where they want to be, answer a question, solve a problem, allay a fear…and do it pronto!
MARKET RESEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND!
Don't skimp on this aspect of developing a targeted message. Market research is where you begin to analyze and understand your target market. It's the starting point for crafting your message.
Learn the pains, fears, frustrations, hesitations, desires and goals of your ideal customer or client. Know what causes them to lose sleep and how you can help eliminate it. Address how your product or service positively affects each one of them.
Then, connect the dots in a cohesive message that is so convincing that it leaves no doubt that the right decision lies in doing business with you!
PAINT LIKE PICASSO!
Good copywriting is the art of strategically delivering a message that gets people to take some form of action.
To accomplish this, paint a crystal clear picture for your reader that shows them how you (or your product or service) will take them from where they are, to where they want to be in the quickest way possible.
Remind them of their pains and frustrations, rub a little salt in the wound, and then ride in on the white horse with the answer that they're longing for.
THAT'S A WRAP!
Everything up to this point has been a choreographed stroll through the unpleasant situation they're currently experiencing. You've been leading them by the hand toward the action you want them to take, such as subscribe to your list, join your business opportunity, use your consulting service or buy your product or service.
Sweeten the deal by adding in a few perks (AKA valuable bonuses) that complement your offer. Just to make sure you've left no stone unturned, remove any potential barriers to making a decision to continue on with you…anything that would give them pause to reconsider.
This usually means removing any risk - typically financial. Offer a satisfaction guarantee, a money-back guarantee, etc.
Now it's time to ask for their business in the form of a Call to Action (CTA). For example:
"Your next move is to click the yellow button below…(to: sign up for, purchase, receive xyz, join xyz, etc) or "Fill in the form below this video...(to: sign up for, purchase xyz, receive xyz, join xyz, etc)
Well there you go - all the elements you need to clean up your marketing message and make sure it's targeted, clear and specific enough to elicit the action you want from your readers and visitors. It's a repeatable formula for success.
