There are a lot of different words and terms associated with internet marketing. It's easy to become overwhelmed with all there is to know about internet marketing when you're new and just starting out. Heck, even if you've been at it a while, like me, your brain can get fogged up and a little irritated at you, and not altogether cooperative!
So here's a handy-dandy reference list of commonly used terms associated with internet marketing for those times when we're "memory-challenged"! They are listed in alphabetical order (mostly), and I'll be adding to this list periodically.
Take a deep breath ...and...here we go:
Above the Fold
The top half of a website. If you imagine the website being folded in half, it would be the upper portion.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing relates to when a person markets/promotes or otherwise sells another person’s or company’s products or services. This is commonly done by linking to a product or service on another website through the use of hyperlinks - text links, banner ads or ad blocks.
Article Marketing
Article marketing is when a person creates content that is typically short in length, but still valuable; that pertains to the business or industry that they’re in. These articles are then distributed to different websites, blogs, forums, social media sites and news organizations.
Attraction Marketing (aka Permission Marketing)
Attraction Marketing is the process of getting a person or prospect's permission or consent before sending them any information or advertising materials via email or otherwise.
Auto Responder
A program that is customized to automatically answer and send email messages. It’s typically used to verify when a prospect or visitor subscribes or opts-in for an offer or to receive information through email. It can also be used for small and large scale email marketing campaigns.
Banner Ads
A form of online advertising where a graphic or image is displayed (usually with text on it). When a banner ad is clicked, the internet user is taken to the website the banner refers to.
B2B
Business to business marketing.
B2C
Business to consumer marketing.
Blog/Blogging
Blogs and blogging have become widely used strategies in internet marketing. Blogging refers to the process of writing and keeping an online journal. It has turned into a popular platform for sharing information about anything and everything.
Click Through Rate (CTR)
The ratio (usually in percentage form) of how many clicks a link receives from visitors compared to the number of times the link is displayed. An example of click through rate is a link that is clicked 5 times out of 100 displays to visitors is 5%.
Cookie
Information that gets stored on a person’s computer or web browser so that when the user returns to a website, the website remembers their preferences. Usually results in faster page loading.
Content Marketing
Content marketing is simply creating and sharing good quality content that will be helpful, entertaining or useful to the reader, as well as being shared multiple times across the web. Sharing can then lead to an increase of website traffic, followers and becoming an authority figure in your industry.
Conversion Rate
The conversion rate relates to the number or percentage of visitors who take a particular action that the marketer wants them to take.
Direct Marketing
Direct marketing is done without using traditional advertising methods that reach more than one person at a time. Instead it is very targeted, very direct. Examples would be using fliers, mailing post cards or letters and talking to a person one on one. In relation to the internet, direct marketing can be done via email campaigns or social media channels to name a few. Avoid the use of spam. To maintain integrity, the use of spam is not only a bad idea, it typically has the opposite effect of what you’d like to have happen. You will have better results by first obtaining your prospect’s permission to email them by the use of a web opt-in form or equivalent.
Domain or Domain Name
The letters, numbers or a combination of both that are between the “www” and the ending prefix (.com,.net, .info etc) in a website’s address. The domain address is like a street address that visitors use to locate a website or business or blog online, similar to a street address in real estate.
Email Marketing
Email marketing, as noted, is a form of direct marketing. Internet users opt-in (sign up) or subscribe to receive newsletters, weekly tips, special bonuses, etc. from the company or person via email from the company. Those who sign up can elect to opt out and stop receiving emails any time that they wish.
Guerilla Marketing
Odd or unusual marketing methods that are done at minimal cost. Customers are often targeted in unusual places or in strange ways and the marketing strategy is typically very creative and/or interactive.
Internet Marketing Software
Internet marketing software relates to any type of software or program- free or paid - that is used to serve a specific purpose in the marketer’s strategy. Niche finders, keyword tools, banner makers, blog plugins that show ads, or software that tracks figures can all be considered internet marketing software.
Internet Trends
What Internet users are searching or looking for online when there is a spike or surge in searches for the particular topic.
Keyword Marketing
The use of keywords or key phrases on a website to attract or draw traffic from people and search engines. People are sent to your website when they link to your keywords.
Keyword Advertising
To Keyword advertise, a list of keywords is selected and associated with a URL and a short message to accompany the listing. When the search term(s) matches the keyword, the URL and the descriptive text are displayed. These listings are called sponsored listings.
Link Building
Refers to the process of getting other websites to link to your website or blog (inbound links).
List Building
List building refers to a strategy of developing and growing a list of people to which you can market your products or services via email.
Marketing Plan
A marketers overall strategy and goals; may include the budget, timeline, priorities, method, advertising, etc.
Micro Website or Niche Blog
A website or blog about one certain niche or segment of people or target market and nothing else.
Micro Blogging
Hitting a very small targeted audience with short bits of information. Popularized by the social media tool Twitter where information is limited to 140 characters per tweet. Has the ability to go viral - spread rapidly.
Mobile Advertising
Mobile advertising is the communication of messages or media content to one or more potential customers who use mobile devices.
Niche Marketing
Niche marketing refers to focusing on one specific product or service in an overall industry. For example, marketing information on one specific type of yoga would be considered niche marketing. It is used to reach targeted audiences rather than marketing to everyone.
Organic Search Results
These are website results that show up naturally in the search engines as opposed to being displayed as a result of pay per click ads. Search engines have different ranking systems, so a website may hold a higher or lower rank on one search engine, and hold a completely different rank or position on a different search engine.
PFP(Pay for Placement)
A marketing program that allows advertisers to pay for listings in search engines. Companies or people bid or pay a fixed fee to get listed in the results of a search.
PPC (Pay Per Click)
Pay per click refers to the advertising method where the company or person places ads on search engines or websites that link back to their own blog or website. The advertiser only pays for these ads when another Internet user clicks on them.
PPS (Pay Per Sale)
Per per sale usually relates to affiliate marketers. In this situation, the marketer only gets paid when a user clicks on an a specific ad and follows all the way through to the purchase.
Search Engine
A web search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web and FTP servers. The search results are generally presented in a list of results often referred to as SERPS, or "search engine results pages". The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Unlike web directories, which are maintained only by human editors, search engines also maintain real-time information by running an algorithm on a web crawler
Social Bookmarking Site
A social bookmarking site is web page which allows visitors or registered users to recommend web sites for other people to visit. These recommendations may be categorized and may contain evaluation rankings. Examples would be Pinterest, Digg
Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing refers to using social media websites or services in your marketing campaign. Examples would be using Twitter, Facebook or YouTube to market your brand, affiliate products, services, blog or any other relevant information.
Spam
Low quality links, text, email or social media updates that are both unsolicited by the recipient and have little to no value except for serving a commercial purpose.
Super Affiliate
An affiliate marketer who holds a good deal of the market for one or more affiliate products.
Target Market
A segment of a potential market for a product or service that has common characteristics. These characteristics are often used to focus (target) groups of customers that have specific wants or needs for a product or service.
Two Tier Affiliate Program
An affiliate marketing program where the marketer receives payment or commissions when a person clicks the ad or purchases the product, plus the marketer also received additional commissions when another person signs up to be an affiliate for the same company or product.
Viral Marketing
A video, website or piece of content on the internet that gains popularity very quickly and is shared rapidly (like a virus).
Webinar
A seminar or instruction session that uses the Internet(Web) as a real time presentation format along with audio channels (via web or telephone) that allow participants to listen and possibly interact with the session. Webinars allow people to participate in information or training sessions from anywhere that has internet and audio access
Website Traffic
The number of visitors or users to a website over a given time period of time
It might seem that some of the terms in this list don't or won't apply to you. However, you will likely come across them at some point, so it doesn't hurt if you're at least familiar with having seen them before. It can help make sense of things down the road as you become more experienced.
