Did you know being a narrow-minded business owner can actually help your bottom line? Let me explain...There was a time when the mass market approach was the “in” thing inmarketing. “One-size-fits-all” and “be everything to everybody” was the soup du jour. Whenever a new Michael Jordan shoe came out, everyone just had to have it, and so manufacturers produced it.
As people change and interests change, trends change. So too does the market. Today people are looking to be specific, to stand out. We chase after different....we talk about that which is unusual or extraordinary. We buzz about things that are audacious and outrageous or one-of-a-kind. Heaven forbid two women show up wearing the same dress at a cocktail party!
Things are different now. We don’t want to be treated as part of a mass market, and we certainly don’t want to be the recipient of a cookie cutter approach that implies that our individuality and our opinions don’t matter.
So then, what does this mean for you and how you market your home business?
I want to change the way you think about serving a specific niche market. It will actually help your business to become more narrow-minded, more tightly focused, as opposed to thinking everyone wants what you have.
As a home business entrepreneur, you want to excel at attracting and keeping a loyal, narrowly focused niche that has a specific interest. The way this is accomplished is to listen to the specific needs of your market and interact with them. Speak their language.
Develop relationships. Get to know them and what they feel. Differentiation is what they want.
When you position yourself as the one who hears them and understands them and can deliver what they want or need, you will be rewarded with a growing base of loyal repeat customers.
Here are a few tips to remember as you plan and execute your strategy:
Position your brand as narrowly as possible
Anticipate the needs of your target audience
Respond quickly
Pay attention to trends
Communicate with relevancy and specificity
What are some of the challenges or successes you’ve had with your particular target audience?
