If you’re brand spankin’ new to online marketing, here’s a toolbox of everything you’ll need to get started, and then some. So let's open it up and take a peek, shall we?
PHYSICAL EQUIPMENT:
A phone (preferably a cell phone for “anywhere accessibility”)
A computer or laptop
A reliable internet connection
A designated space in your home that is devoted solely to your business activities and can be closed off from distractions and noise.
A digital video recorder - you can use either a smartphone or a separate video recording device (camcorder, flip video)
A microphone - It’s a good idea to have a decent microphone for recording your voice, especially if you’re narrating anything.
WEBSITE HOSTING & DOMAIN NAME SERVICES
A domain name - your specific address on the web (www.yourname.com)
A website provider service to host your website/blog
*Examples would be GoDaddy, HostGator, Bluehost, etc.
CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS) aka blog software
Blog software is available for free and is designed to simplify creating and maintaining blogs. They support the authoring, editing, and publishing of blog posts and comments, with special functions for image management, article syndication and comment moderation.
*Examples would be WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, etc.
EMAIL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (aka auto-responder)
You’ll need a way to automate your email campaign to your subscriber list by using an auto-responder service. Auto-responders are used as e-mail marketing tools, to immediately provide information to your prospective customers and then follow-up with them at preset time intervals. It also handles unsubscribe processes and address changes. A real time-saver!
* Examples would be Aweber, Constant Contact, MailChimp, etc.
MARKETING SYSTEM
As a new online business entrepreneur, you need to implement a plan to attract customers, but what if you could set yourself up for faster success? There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when there are already powerful, comprehensive marketing systems available.
You should do your due diligence and spend time looking for a system that is a good fit for you. Look for one that is “results-based” and is both proven and repeatable or duplicatable.
There are lots of free resources online that can help you along your journey, but they tend to be “theory-based” and aren’t really proven to be consistent. They often lack the detail and sophistication of a comprehensive marketing system.
I wanted a system that was almost turnkey so that I could just plug in and implement from day one. So I looked for a marketing system designed by someone who is actively using it to generate a 6 and 7 figure income with it. That’s the kind of system every new marketer should want to follow!
LEADERSHIP
You already know that as a home business entrepreneur, the buck stops with you. Everything is up to you...but is it really?
When I first decided to become an online entrepreneur I had every intention to “go it alone.” I had two things: strong motivation and a weak pocketbook. I didn’t think I could afford a business coach or consultant, so I utilized online marketing sites to gather specific information to fill in the missing gaps in my knowledge base (which was considerable at the time!) You can pick up some real golden nuggets of information this way.
One thing that resonated with me was the idea of the mentorship - a person, team or community that I could be a part of and learn from. When you work from home it can be isolating and I really felt I could benefit from, and ultimately be more successful, if I could just find a mentoring situation - inexpensively, of course. Eventually I did and it’s one of the single best decisions I ever made.
I recommend that whenever possible, you find a mentor with impeccable credentials and a reputation for integrity. If you can find one that has a strong following or even a mastermind group, that’s a huge plus. They’re out there, and surprisingly inexpensive!
That leads me to the final tool in the toolbox:
Y.O.U.
When you gather all the tools, training and technology and combine them with a proven system under the mentorship and support of an experienced leader, the only thing you’re left with is YOU.
YOU are the "it factor" in your own show - your online business. You are the variable, the intangible element. What will you do? How will you affect outcomes?
YOU are the only one who can take action to put it all together. YOU are the one who chooses to flip the switch on for your future. What are you waiting for?
